SecretEATS – an underground dining experience to remember

SecretEATS is an underground dining experience, bringing together a group of people in a stunning secret location, all with a love of food.

How it works: you sign up on their website to receive invites to “ EAT ” at their upcoming dinners. These dinners are hosted in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. You also have the option of selecting to either “ HOST ” or “ COOK ” at one of these popular dinning events.

I signed up to their “ EAT ” mailing list sometime back, and at the end of February, I reserved my seat for my first SecretEATS 🙂

A few weeks before the dinner, you are emailed a link to a survey. The survey has a few funny questions on it, like the most adventurous thing you have ever done and what your nickname is, but then it also has a space for you to include any dietary requirements.

The biggest thing is that just like the name suggests, the venue is a secret , and only revealed to you by 10am on the morning of the dinner. I found it all quite exciting leading up to the big reveal, trying frantically to guess where we would be headed. Our venue, once revealed, The GRIND Studios in the Maboneng Precinct .

Thanks to a special partnership with UBER , we all got a discount on fares to get to and from the venue safely.

Upon arriving we were greeted by Greg , our incredibly friendly SecretEATS host, where we then recited the special password: “ Bump and grind, twist and shout… let’s eat some awesome food, that’s what the evening is all about. ” Of course, mine sounded more like a bad Vanilla Ice rap version, but it did provide those around me with a good laugh 🙂

Delicious Arendsig wine, beers from Innis & Gunn and Bombay Sapphire cocktails accompanied an exquisite fine-dining menu by the executive chef of JEM Exclusive Catering , Johan Harley .

The evening was incredibly memorable and thoroughly enjoyable!

Innis and Gunn! Now you’re talking my language.
I have always been invited to the ones here in Durban, but have never managed to make it. I have to be honest and say the cost is a little out of my budget at the moment, although I would LOVE to experience the entire “secret eats” theme.

I cant wait to hear about your next Secret Adventure! I have heard they are amazing and funky and hosted in unique venues.

Have your say...
